It’s time to start talking about Black women and the rising need for surrogacy and egg donation in the African-American community.
Infertility affects at least 12 percent of all women up to the age of 44, and studies suggest Black women may be almost twice as likely to experience infertility as white women. Yet only about 8 percent of Black women between the ages of 25 and 44 seek medical help to get pregnant, compared to 15 percent of white women.
Why are so many black women suffering through infertility in silence?
When Eloise Drane looked into donating her eggs, she was shocked by what she was told… “African-American women didn’t have infertility issues.” HUH?! And it made Eloise realize that black women’s needs regarding infertility treatments and alternative family building methods, such as surrogacy and egg donation, were not being met.
So in 2008, Eloise took matters into her own hands and started Family Inceptions – Georgia’s first surrogacy and egg donation agency. While many other agencies have sprung up around Georgia and across the country, Family Inceptions remains one of only three black-owned surrogacy agencies in the United States.
In 2019, The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) took notice of Family Inceptions and the work Eloise was doing to raise awareness regarding infertility in the black community and invited her to participate in their newest series – Black Women OWN the Conversation.
