Step 2: When You’re Considering Becoming a Surrogate

Making the decision to become a gestational surrogate is, without a doubt, life changing.

Before you set out on the surrogacy journey though, there are a few things to know to ensure you’re ready to take this role on.

First, you’ll want to have a clear understanding of what exactly gestational surrogacy is.

Gestational Surrogacy

A gestational surrogate carries the intended couple’s embryo, which has been created through the couple’s or donated sperm and/or egg. This means that the embryo is not biologically related to the surrogate. The embryo is transferred via IVF to the surrogate’s uterus in the hopes that it will implant. If it does, that is considered a pregnancy.

If you’re working with an agency, gestational surrogacy is the only type of surrogacy option that will be open to you, though it’s quickly becoming the accepted norm for surrogacy throughout the world.

Benefits of Choosing Surrogacy Through an Agency

If you’ve never been a surrogate before, we highly recommend that you choose to work with an agency. It can be monumentally helpful to use a go-to resource like Family Inceptions to ask questions you have along the way. It’s like a built-in support system. You also gain access to many benefits that will make your surrogacy journey smoother and more enjoyable. These benefits include:

  • Custom matching – You’ll have someone with experience doing all the leg work to ensure you are matched only with a couple that’s a good fit for you
  • Advocacy – You’ll be supported and assisted each step of the way, from making medical decisions to working through legal matters
  • Payment assurance – You’ll get the peace of mind knowing that your intended parents can afford to pay you, plus you’ll get a legal contract that binds them to do so
  • Personal support – Before, during and after pregnancy, you’ll have access to counseling and other personalized support to care for you particularly

Working with an agency can be a safety net that provides assurance that everything will go as it should. Pregnancy is hard enough – working with your intended parents shouldn’t be!
