As we wrap up another National Infertility Awareness Week, we can’t help but be reminded of the WHYs behind gestational surrogacy.
Why would a woman become a gestational surrogate?
It’s not glamorous…. The weight gain. The hormones. The mood swings.
You’re sacrificing your body, with the potential for long term effects.
You are regularly asked to explain yourself and your decisions to family and strangers alike.
It can be downright painful (12 weeks of daily progesterone shots?!)
So why would any woman sign up for such a challenge by choice? Because it’s not about her.
A woman who becomes a surrogate isn’t in it for the money. She’s not in it because it “seems like fun.” She’s not in it because she decided on a whim.
She became a surrogate because she was called into this role. She was called to serve someone else. To sacrifice her own comfort in the name of serving a couple or person she may or may not know. She was called to bring life into this world, that without her, would not be possible. Surrogacy is one of the ultimate examples of “service above self.”
Gestational surrogates are the women who run in when all hope runs out.
Many women become surrogates after witnessing a close friend or family member struggle to start a family – either due to infertility or other life circumstances. She sees their heartache month after month, year after year. Wanting… hoping… praying to have a child of their own. And she wants to help. But how can she help beyond emotional support and words of encouragement? How can she make a real impact?
Then one day it hits her… surrogacy. She had smooth pregnancies with no complications, and she loved every second of those 40 weeks. To be able to give the gift of life to hopeful parents, while getitng to experience the joy of growing a baby – absolutely amazing. And so her journey into the world of surrogacy begins. And once the spark is lit, it’s hard to extinguish.
Even if it doesn’t work out helping her friend or family member, she has realized the power she has to change someone’s world for the better. To help create a family. To provide someone with the joy of parenthood.
To be pregnant with a purpose.
